What merino wool actually is
Merino is wool from Merino sheep, a breed developed for exceptionally fine fleece. The word "wool" makes many people picture thick, scratchy sweaters, but fiber fineness changes everything: merino fibers are typically less than half the diameter of traditional wool, which is why merino garments can be worn directly against the skin during exercise.
Three properties make merino unusual among performance fabrics. First, the fiber absorbs up to roughly 30% of its weight in moisture vapor before it feels wet, which keeps skin drier during variable effort. Second, wool's natural crimp traps air, so the same shirt insulates in cool conditions and breathes in warm ones. Third, merino resists odor-causing bacteria, so garments can be worn multiple times between washes — a practical difference that reduces the need for frequent shit replacement.
What does micron count mean?
A micron is one-thousandth of a millimeter, and micron count measures the average diameter of a wool fiber. It is the single most important number on a merino spec sheet, because fiber diameter determines how the fabric feels against skin.
- 24+ microns: traditional wool territory. Durable, but most people find it prickly against bare skin.
- 21–23 microns: entry-level merino. Fine for outer layers; some people notice itch when worn next to skin.
- 19–20.5 microns: mid-grade merino, common in activewear. Comfortable for most wearers.
- 17.5–18.9 microns: extra-fine merino. Soft enough that most people with wool sensitivity find it comfortable. (Aiua uses 18.5-micron fiber for this reason.)
- Below 17.5 microns: ultrafine and superfine grades. Luxuriously soft but less abrasion-resistant and more expensive; more common in dress knits than activewear.
A useful rule when comparing brands: if a company doesn't publish its micron count, assume it's above 19.5. Fine fiber costs more, and brands that pay for it almost always say so.
What does gsm mean?
Gsm stands for grams per square meter and measures fabric weight — how much material is in the knit. Where micron determines softness, gsm determines warmth, drape, and durability. Two shirts made from identical fiber can perform very differently at different weights.
- 135–160 gsm (lightweight): best for high-output activity and warm weather — running, hot yoga, summer training. Dries fastest of the wool weights and layers easily. Aiua's tees and tanks are 150 gsm.
- 170–200 gsm (midweight): the all-rounder range. Cool-weather training, hiking, everyday wear.
- 210–260 gsm (heavyweight): insulation-first. Cold-weather base layers, winter mid-layers, and heavier pieces like quarter-zips.
- 260+ gsm (expedition): serious cold. Rare in general activewear.
Weight is a trade-off, not a quality score: heavier fabric lasts longer and insulates better, lighter fabric breathes and dries faster. The right answer depends on the activity, which is why the activity section below is organized around it.
What is superwash treatment?
Untreated wool fibers are covered in microscopic scales. In a washing machine's agitation, those scales lock together and the fabric felts and shrinks — the classic ruined-sweater outcome. Superwash treatment smooths or coats those scales so the garment can be machine washed, which matters for activewear that gets washed far more often than a sweater.
The most common method is the chlorine-Hercosett process: a mild treatment smooths the fiber's cuticle scales, then an extremely thin polymer resin — measured in fractions of a micron — is applied to keep the remaining scales from interlocking. The word "coating" alarms people, and the concern deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance.
The peer-reviewed evidence is more favorable than the fiber-forum debate suggests. A 2024 study in Water, Air, & Soil Pollution (Collie et al.) compared six fibers under a standard marine biodegradation test and found chlorine-Hercosett wool was the most biodegradable fiber tested — degrading over three times faster than untreated wool and more than ten times faster than polyester, because the treatment makes the fiber surface more accessible to microorganisms. Elemental analysis of the residues found no evidence of microplastic left behind by the resin, which appears to biodegrade along with the fiber. A separate 2023 soil-burial study (Hodgson et al.) found that treated wool decomposed more slowly than untreated wool at first, though it still reached over 95% mass loss — conditions matter, and superwash wool is not identical to untreated fiber.
While superwash isn't perfect, we believe the tradeoff is worth it: making merino practical enough for everyday use means more people can move away from synthetic activewear entirely. A base layer that can't survive a washing machine doesn't get worn, and a garment that doesn't get worn helps no one. Merino vs. synthetics: an honest comparison
Neither fabric wins everything. Polyester and nylon dry faster, resist abrasion better, and cost less up front. Merino regulates temperature across a wider range, resists odor dramatically better, feels better against most skin once sweat is involved, and sheds no plastic microfibers in the wash. Where synthetics are the right call: if you need the absolute fastest dry time (multi-day trips with river crossings, for example), maximum abrasion resistance under a heavy pack, or the lowest possible price, a synthetic or a merino-blend piece is a defensible choice. For most training, running, yoga, and everyday wear, the odor and temperature-regulation advantages of merino matter more, day to day, than drying speed.
How to choose merino by activity
Running
Choose lightweight fabric (135–160 gsm) and fine fiber (under 19 micron) — sustained output means sustained skin contact and heat. Merino's advantage for runners is comfort across changing conditions: the same shirt works for a cold start and a warm finish, and it won't smell after back-to-back runs. Look for flatlock seams, which sit flat against skin and reduce chafe over distance.
Hot yoga
Counterintuitive but real: lightweight merino performs well in heated studios because it manages moisture vapor before you feel drenched and doesn't hold odor between classes. Choose the lightest weight available and a fitted cut that moves with inversions. Avoid heavyweight fabric entirely here.
Hiking and backpacking
Midweight (170–200 gsm) suits three-season hiking; lightweight works for summer. This is the one activity where blends earn real consideration: a small nylon percentage meaningfully improves abrasion resistance where pack straps rub. Multi-day trips are where merino's odor resistance stops being a nice-to-have — one shirt genuinely covers a week.
Everyday and travel
Any weight works; pick for climate. Travelers gravitate to merino because fewer washes means packing two shirts instead of six. For daily wear, fine micron matters more than weight — you'll notice softness long before you notice insulation.
How to evaluate a merino brand
Merino activewear is expensive enough that it's worth knowing how to read a product page. Five things to check, for any brand:
- Is the micron count published? This is the strongest single signal. Brands using fine fiber state it; vague language ("ultra-soft merino") without a number usually means coarser fiber.
- Is the gsm published? Without it you can't compare warmth or durability across brands, or know what you're paying per gram of wool.
- What's the actual fiber content? "Merino" on the label can mean anywhere from 100% to under 50%. Blends aren't dishonest — spandex adds stretch, nylon adds durability — but the percentage should be easy to find, and the price should reflect it.

Which certifications, and what do they cover? Certifications verify different things, and no single one covers everything:
- RWS (Responsible Wool Standard): animal welfare and land management at the farm level, including a mulesing ban.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: the finished fabric is tested for harmful substances — relevant for anything worn against skin.
- BSCI: social-compliance auditing of the factories where garments are sewn.
- GOTS / OCS: organic fiber standards, more common in cotton.
- Is the sourcing traceable? Better brands can tell you the fiber's origin and supply chain. "Ethically sourced" with no specifics is marketing, not information.

Care and longevity
Washing
Machine wash cold or at 86°F on a gentle or wool cycle, inside out, with a mild or wool-specific detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats the fibers and reduces the moisture management you paid for. Skip bleach and anything with enzymes labeled for protein stains, which can attack the wool itself. And wash less than instinct tells you: airing a merino shirt overnight is often all it needs.
Drying
Lay flat or hang to dry, away from direct heat. Even superwash merino is happiest air-dried; dryers shorten its life even when they don't shrink it. Merino dries faster than most people expect — a lightweight tee dries overnight indoors.
Pilling
Some pilling in the first several wears is normal for merino: shorter fibers work loose from the yarn under friction, form small balls, and then the fabric stabilizes. It's cosmetic, not structural. Remove pills with a fabric shaver or a fine comb, never by pulling. Persistent heavy pilling under backpack straps or seat belts is friction doing what friction does — a blend or a heavier gsm handles those zones better.
Storage and repair
Fold rather than hang heavier knits, store clean (moths seek out sweat and skin oils, not the wool itself), and use cedar in long-term storage. Small holes are worth darning early — a five-minute repair when a hole is two millimeters, a lost garment when it's twenty.
Frequently asked questions
Is merino wool itchy?
Fine merino is not itchy for most people. Itch is caused by fiber diameter: fibers above roughly 22 microns buckle against skin and trigger nerve endings, while fibers under 19 microns flex instead. Most people who "can't wear wool" have only worn coarse wool. Genuine wool allergy (to lanolin) exists but is rare.
Can you machine wash merino wool?
Yes, if it's superwash-treated — which nearly all merino activewear is. Use a cold or 30°C gentle cycle with mild detergent and air dry. Untreated merino should be hand washed.
How often should you wash merino activewear?
Far less often than synthetics. Because merino resists odor-causing bacteria, a shirt can typically be worn several times — often a full week of moderate use — before it needs washing. Airing it out overnight between wears extends this further.
Is superwash merino still biodegradable?
Yes. In a 2024 peer-reviewed marine biodegradation study, superwash (chlorine-Hercosett) wool was the most biodegradable fiber tested — degrading faster than untreated wool and more than ten times faster than polyester — with no microplastic residue detected from the treatment. Why is merino activewear expensive?
Fine fiber is the main cost: fiber below 19 microns comes from a limited supply of flocks and costs several times more per kilogram than coarse wool or polyester. Certification audits, traceable sourcing, and lower production volumes add to it. The offsetting math is wear frequency — a shirt worn four times per wash, lasting years, often costs less per wear than a drawer of synthetics.
Does merino work in summer?
Yes — lightweight merino (under 160 gsm) is used by desert hikers and hot-yoga practitioners precisely because it moves moisture vapor away from skin and doesn't smell in heat. The instinct that wool equals warmth comes from heavyweight knits, not lightweight jersey.
What's the difference between merino and regular wool?
Fiber diameter, mostly. Merino sheep produce fleece typically between 15 and 23 microns; traditional wool breeds produce 25–40 micron fiber. The finer fiber is what makes merino wearable against skin and suitable for activewear.
